A Public Apology From WildGoose

Guest Editorial by WildGoose

After receiving a relentless barrage of disgusted comments, tweets, and messages regarding my most recent article entitled CultOfVivian Exploits Teenage Girl’s Suicide for Attention, I’ve done some deep soul-searching and I’ve concluded that a public apology is in order.

I’ve been thoroughly reprimanded by the Editor-in-Chief and the rest of the Ralph Retort team for not only besmirching the publication’s name, but also for producing content inconsistent with the quality of work expected from Ralph Retort writers. With this article, I hope to make amends to both the Ralph Retort staff and its readership. There’s absolutely no excuse or justification for the way the last article was written.

Singling out Nicole Sund (aka CultOfVivian) for “grief tourism” or “grave-standing” in the wake of Lillian Feng’s tragic death was wrong, ignorant, and displayed a complete disregard for the feelings of others. There’s no justifiable reason behind excluding people such as Liana Kerzner, Oliver Campbell, and Paolo Munoz from my last piece.

After Feng’s bereaved boyfriend specifically requested privacy, Nikki (aka Nicole Sund aka CultOfVivian) took it upon herself to break the news of Feng’s passing to everyone on Twitter using the #GamerGate and #NotYourShield hashtags. Rather than respecting Ashton’s wishes, Nicole used the opportunity to boost her social capital by linking Feng’s suicide to a hashtag activist movement, which ironically fits the Social Justice “Gamers Are Dead” narrative. When confronted and criticized about her self-serving breach of privacy, Nicole denied that she had broke the news for her own gain and claimed that the only reason she used the hashtag was because she couldn’t possibly ask everyone individually if they knew Feng. The problem with Nikki’s claim is that she could have just as easily asked Ashton to pass the news along to people Feng knew through GamerGate. She knew this. She’s just playing dumb.

The only face-to-face meeting Nicole ever had with Feng was at a GamerGate meet-up where her and several others took a group photo together. Nikki posted this picture along with the hashtag in order to make it seem as if they had a close relationship with each other–when in reality–they had only met once in real life and just barely “knew” each other through the hashtag.

Nicole’s reaction to criticism of her actions was not only to attack those who criticized her, but to deflect blame on to them as well. Her go-to rebuttal is to point out that Ralph Retort has a Patreon link on the same page as the article that was critical of her; so in her mind, that negates the entire premise of the critique and suggests that The Ralph Retort is exploiting her death. Ultimately, Nicole was the one who let the genie out of the bottle and it’s disingenuous of her to blame the politicization of Feng’s death on her critics. CultOfVivian is using a common psychological manipulation tactic (most notably employed by feminists) called “Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender.

Oliver Campbell, a familiar face to most of those surrounding GamerGate, is a charismatic con-artist who uses pseudo-intellectual rhetoric to pull the wool over his followers’ eyes. His claim to fame in GamerGate was his esoteric knowledge of an FBI investigation into fake bomb threats, which ended up being a completely bogus story. Oliver’s phoniness doesn’t end there, of course.

Oliver, much like Nicole, has taken the opportunity to virtue signal and when confronted about this, he shifts the blame onto those who criticize his indiscretion. Remember that DARVO tactic?

Liana Kerzner’s foray into the Suicide Social Capital Venture involved an offer of a “cosplay tribute” to Feng’s boyfriend. Surely, this is the most appropriate time to be stripping and catching Feng’s boyfriend on the rebound, Liana.

Once again, we have another reversal of victim and offender below:

Liana’s response to criticism is blocking, reporting, and censorship:

Look who else decided to show up and start begging for shekels and validation: Our old friend, Paolo Munoz (@GameDiviner). Rather than just donating to a suicide prevention charity and/or encouraging others to do so, Paolo makes it his divine mission from God to plaster his name, face, and the GamerGate tag on his own charity page following Feng’s suicide.

Remember, this is the same delusional nutjob who famously pronounced, “I…AM…GAMERGATE!

A recent addition to our list of grief tourists is a man who goes by the name of Robert Kingett. This guy is a one man freak show who–after stuttering like an assburgers victim while getting interrupted by a Stephen Hawking voice for eight minutes–eventually gets around to telling me to fuck myself…but not before pimping out his Patreon account, of course (not even fucking kidding you).

The real story here isn’t the people begging for Patreon money, but rather, it’s the reaction to the last article I posted. KotakuInAction made an entire thread discussing whether or not to censor The Ralph Retort because of my article; and if this isn’t a red flag to GamerGate, I’m not sure what is. You would think that people proclaiming their support for free speech wouldn’t be so quick to squelch it when being criticized, but apparently that’s just not the case.

GamerGate has been co-opted by professional victims and social justice warriors; and they wouldn’t have reached their level of clout without a fawning gaggle of thirsty yes-men, cowards, and hypocrites. If you want them to go away and quit intruding upon our freedoms, confront and engage their enablers. These people are being used and they have a right to at least be informed of it. SJWs are incapable of changing their behavior, but we can at least make them go swindle other SJWs, rather than sit here and allow them to feed their cyberbullied damsel-in-distress narrative to the rest of us. The best way to confront an SJW is with their own words. Nothing triggers them more. They’ll call you a stalker, harasser, abuser, criminal, pedophile, fascist, racist, sexist, or whatever demonized word seems to fit their mood on a given day, but if you can see past that as a sign of weakness, it will only work to your benefit.

Social justice imposes weakness on the strong and justice lends strength to the weak. These people are powerless without their lies and if you shine a light on them, they scream and scatter like cockroaches.

    Ha!

I was actually wondering if there will be backpedaling when you deleted your replies on the previous article. At least you’re standing up to your stance on this fiasco.

Keep this ball rolling. Let’s see how many scammers and co-opters we can expose.

    • WildGoose

      I didn’t delete my replies.

        They were deleted…but I didn’t delete them.

        • Dann OK!

          #RalphGate

  • SiliconNooB

Well said! Vivian and Liana have done a fine job completely shitting up the hashtag with language policing and attention whoring.

Vivian in particular has been seen to use her harem of thirsty suitors like a pack of attack dogs, in order to mass flag people’s accounts…

    • Hayley

This. Why can’t Vivian just let people do what they want without having to intervene? The only “necessity” for her to get involved is some delusion to keep sticking her nose in this tragedy like she can take a moral high ground. Hope she sleeps soundlessly at night with all that smug superiority.

      • SiliconNooB

What a thoroughly obnoxious busy body!

    • dsar

Cult of Vivian also tone polices people who “misgender” (actually correctly gender) transsexuals, the SJW-lites are getting ridiculous. Most of the e-celebs on GG are now from San Francisco. It’s literally that GG has been taken over by a San Francisco clique just like indie gaming, how repugnant and ironic.

  • Pepep Popep

I don’t really follow GG stuff anymore, but holy shit this was hilarious.

  • Syltique

I didn’t even comment on the Wildgoose article in question, and I don’t use twitter or reddit. But I still honestly can’t see what the big deal is that would justify hit pieces like this.

Isn’t Liana K paid to cosplay semi-professionally, with a cosplay show as one of her main jobs? I barely follow her stuff, but wasn’t she hired at The Escapist with a cosplay show in mind? If that’s the case, she’s fairly visible already. I’ve seen lots of bands do tribute concerts, or fundraising events and they’re not doing it to cash in. A local band here played a show / fundraiser to help out a friend when his house burned down not too long ago.

And then the part that gets me, is that I’ve never in my life heard of this person who died. Does anyone in their right mind actually think she would get more famous from sending this tweet, or offering to do some kind of tribute / fundraiser event? She’s literally an unknown person who I only even heard about because of people complaining about Liana K seeking fame. If she’s really seeking fame, she picked the most obscure, unknown person imaginable to attempt to cash in on.

Even the whole complaint itself seems to really be nitpicking. She said she was sorry for their loss and just sent an offer to help out if they wanted it. Is that the extent of the issue here, or am I missing something? Because that is ridiculous. Especially considering one of the primary elements of Gamergate back in the beginning in trying to improve their own image was in donating to charities, specifically for the reason of benefiting Gamergate’s PR. Seems extremely hypocritical to get this bent out of shape about something so benign and harmless, especially when GG – collectively – was known for doing that same thing in much more blatant ways.

Even this Vivian girl, no one even knows who this person is except people living their life on twitter lol. I feel like sometimes we’re looking at the forest, while you guys are battling it out over a few acorns. I actually love that The Ralph Retort covers some of this stuff for those of us that don’t follow all the minutia of twitter, and I think Ralph is aware of that in his writing style. But I would just suggest everyone else keeps in mind the stature of some of the people you’re covering, because to a lot of us, they’re totally insignificant and unknown people – and hearing about their fame-seeking exploits just makes me laugh.

And as far as Wildgoose’s apology, from what I can tell your writing is not that bad. It’s certainly better than Jack. That guy … holy shit lol.

    • FearsomeMudcrab

Benefit concerts are almost always done for PR, as long as the other parties cool with I see no problem.

Of course the other party in this situation was not cool with it. Ash repeatedly said he wanted privacy. Vivian and friends instead of respecting the grieved wishes used the hashtag to tell as many people as they possible could. They didn’t council with him at all. Liana never even talked with the man about doing cosplay, she’s just tried to bank on a tragedy to get more eyes on her, and in turn fill out her schedule book.

A lot of people thought the charities were pointless and only served to fill out the career books of ecelebs. I wouldn’t call these people unknowns, on the hashtag they’re pretty big with a large number of followers and attention.

      • Syltique

Unknown in the sense that, what else does she do besides tweeting? If you think she’s worthy of coverage though, I’ll take your word on it.

        • FearsomeMudcrab

I consider the tribute and fundraising to be secondary to the good press and attention it garners. I’m not knocking benefit gigs but generally people don’t spend large sums of money booking stages and renting out pricey audio equipment to cheer someone up.

    • WildGoose

“And as far as Wildgoose’s apology, from what I can tell your writing is not that bad. It’s certainly better than Jack. That guy … holy shit lol.”

The apology was meant to be a joke. I can see that a few people didn’t get that…you’re not the only one. Oh well!

      • CharlieWhistle

I don’t know man. Maybe they were sincere in some way while still being dicks, maybe they’re just all the way dicks. I think if theywere sincere and only cared about Ms. Feng, they could accept criticism and take accountability for what they said. That being said, linking to a hashtag is nowhere near as bad as pimping Patreon or your fucking cosplay. Why the fuck would he ever respond “Oh my god, it would be amazing if you dressed up as some random character in order to honor Lily in some irrelevant way!” That IS fucking stupid.

        I guess I just don’t give a fuck about them anymore. They’re “e-celebs.”

    • Throwingrocks

When there aren’t outright opponents of GamerGate to attack, nor SJW’s being idiots, people who write on the Ralph Retort need to go after SOMEONE that the readership will recognize, and already don’t particularly like.

Remember: Infighting isn’t just for SJW’s. We’re damned good at it too.

      • dsar

What utter bullshit, I was never a fan of Ralph and am still not. But after how GG destroyed the man’s income for hosting an “offensive” article that hurt the fee-fee’s of you part GamerGaters, it’s become obvious that you are SJW-lites.
        Own it, stop pretending otherwise.

        • Throwingrocks

          Yawn.

Ralph knows the game. He’s been playing it since GamerGate started. He’s walked up to the line of destroying people he doesn’t like and sometimes even crossed it. And now people are giving it back to him. Universe is funny that way sometimes, where people who make their money by being assholes will sometimes lose their money for being assholes to the wrong person. I don’t even think that’s ironic except in perhaps the most technical way.

And if it takes an SJW to point that out, then you clearly have absolutely no idea what an SJW is. But please, keep posting – I’d like to know what else you’re an idiot about. (well, no, I don’t give a shit. But you seem like the kind of person who wants to have the last word since you posted on a threat 10 days over now, so hey, have at it.)

If you don’t like that, I don’t care.

  • Mad Vandal

This is a massive improvement over the prior article. You even got in Liana K’s latest BS and a nice backing of tweet evidence. Much more DARVO proof too. Nice job.

  • Tehy

Still not in favor of this whole fiasco…

That said one question for a lot of people: how do you call out someone for using a suicide for attention, without ending up using that same suicide for attention?

    Oh, what’s that? It’s impossible?

So either you don’t do if at all, maybe do it ineffectively… Or you do it normally and hope people see you’re being honest. You can interpret that shit any way you want afterwards, but you gotta provide some proof of disingenousness, not just automatic accusation

  • Kellen Joel

Well, this happened. Lily’s boyfriend said they wanted to be left alone, and what did they do?

They say that it’d take a death for GG to end. I wonder if SJWs are happy now, since they love wishing death on people they hate.

Gotta say though, some people, even on this site, called you an asshole. Did that blur the lines of who’s actually in GG, and who ain’t? Either way, keep your friends close.

  • fnd

Ok, the title of this article is legit clickbait, lol. That being said, this article is an improvement over the last article (which i voiced disagreement multiple times) and it laids out a better case against the other parties. At least there is no RIP trolling this time. Respecting the wishes of the family would have helped more, but i think at this point it’s kinda helpless.

    • WildGoose

“Respecting the wishes of the family would have helped more”

      Tell that to CultofVivian.

      • fnd

You could have not mentioned the case in the editorial and encourage others not to talk about it if they feel the urge to know more, but you didn’t. This blame lies in your hands too IMO.

      • DukeMagus

you told this to the cosplayer already, and now someone went and told it to you…
Then both of you doubled down on what you did, so… everything is the same.

  • http://renegadepen.blogspot.co.uk/ Dm Gray

Is this “anyone who disagrees with me or criticises something I did is an SJW”?
Do we need to bring up Sargon’s law?

The problem I had wasn’t criticism of the people you featured. That is perfectly fine. I’ve often agreed with criticism and even in this I am somewhat sympathetic to criticism over not respecting a call for privacy.

It still doesn’t justify being an even bigger ass hat, and that is what some seem *desperate* to do.
They’ll shout all day about SJW, because they disagree fundamentally with the things SJW advocate for, but they will engage in IDENTICAL behaviour without an ounce of self awareness.
How is this style of “trolling” not:
1)Virtue signalling (just a different set of virtues)
2)call out culture (a staple of SJW)
3)disrespecting the families wishes further (ie: hypocrisy)
4)applying double standards (free speech for you, zero editorial control, zero tone/morality policing. But anyone you disagree with must be held to some arbitrary standard. They aren’t allowed those same freedoms you claim… because reasons! They’re SJW! They’re ecelebs!)

This is the same old bullshit that has happened since the early months and which Ralph has most often been the victim of.
Drama, butt hurt and hypocrisy, all while claiming a moral highground.

This is why I’ve always refused to take sides even when I sternly disagree with the behaviour of those involved.
I just think anyone crowing over personal beefs is an unbearable faggot that should really know better.

    • WildGoose

So we should just stand by and not call people out when they’re being self-serving cunts, just to avoid looking bad ourselves? CultOfVivian is the one who let it out of the bag. I can’t put that back in there for her. Quit deflecting blame to those criticizing her.

Also, what “personal beef” do I have with any of these people?

      • http://renegadepen.blogspot.co.uk/ Dm Gray

        “no bad tactics”?
        Is that you movie blob?

“they started it” is a child’s argument.
“other people did something I disagree with, so it’s okay for me to do it” is just literally retarded.
Just accept that what you did was *worse* than what you were trying to criticise.

If your INITIAL article had been the second one, and you removed the posturing nonsense because you’re so butthurt you got criticism, it would have been fine. People would have disliked it, but you wouldn’t have been such a giant twat.
Instead, you CHOSE to be a cunt. Accept that you’re a cunt and move on. Stop trying to pretend that other people being cunty makes you less of a cunt.
The world is filled with murderers, rapists and thieves. I guess that means we all get to murder, rape and thieve because “we cant prevent these things”

I do find it so amusing that people adamant about their own right to criticise are *so* cringingly hypocritical when they are criticised for their own conduct.

Hell, Even Ralph’s “just being edge” excuse pissed me off.
I’m fine with Ralph. I think he’s too often been the subject of abuse and I’ve criticised it EVERY FUCKING TIME.
I disagree when he’s being a cunt, but I disagree with the people he’s criticising when they’re cunts.
But this fiasco reminds me most of McIntosh.
I genuinely think that Ralph has gone full McIntosh on this shit, and you should NEVER go Full McIntosh.

        • fnd

I think SJW’s needs to taste their own medicine most of the time. This isn’t what happened in this case, since Wildgoose aided the SJW’s in disturbing the family plead for privacy.

  • Maintenance Renegade

I’m pretty sure this blog’s staff and Cult of Vivian herself are the only ones who give a fuck about Cult of Vivian at this point.

    • WildGoose

      And you…

      • Maintenance Renegade

Help! Help! WildGoose is writing pithy replies at me! Make him retract them Ralph!

  • Typical

Dude, no apology necessary here, fuck those people. And cult of Vivian, I have to ask. It she trans, because I couldn’t honestly tell if it was a dude cosplaying vivian or not.

    • fnd

I tought she was a tranny too, lol. And the apology was meant to be clickbait.

  • nig-slayer

no need for a apology man you are right,They are wrong

  • scemar

Some people earn the phrase “this is why we can’t have nice things”.
    Thanks for the public service.

  • CharlieWhistle

This does change my perception of your criticisms quite a bit. Nice post.

  • Winston_from_the_Ministry

This site taking ( or trying to at least) the moral high ground? Excuse me while I take days to recovery from a hysterical laughing fit. ???

What happened to fuck being nice?

    • WildGoose

      Did you read the article?

  • Hayley

I kept my hand over my mouth the entire time I read this. This article was better than the last. The subject is still touchy, but it does explain in more detail why some are upset over Vivian and Liana’s antics. I had no idea about Oliver and GameDivider because I muted them, but that’s still pretty opportunistic.

I got a lot of grief for defending the previous article’s right to exist. Lost a lot of followers for wrongthink. But this one is better.

  • Jimmy Park

Fuck yes. Thank you for calling out all these fucking con artists.

  • Kev Lew

I would wager that everyone has something they have difficulty seeing discussed publicly.
Usually it is when something you have experienced (separately) is being discussed in detail or from a limited perspective, from there you have 3 choices. Chime in and try to bring an alternate perspective to the discussion (results vary depending on the degree of bias in those already participating), ignore them (as best possible), freak out and start going after the people behind the opinions (because, reasons. . . ). Personally I’m more for the second option depending on who is talking about it. But, online, option 3 seems to be the personal favourite of so many people with too much time spent on social media pages.
Where I personally draw the line is when online discussion results in unsanctioned/unwelcome interactions in a persons day to day. If someone says something you like/don’t-like unless you have a specific invite from that party do not interrupt them during the day-to-day grind. This counts as much (possibly more) for well wishers as those holding onto salt.

  • Sergio Montserrat

    Thanks for your not-apology.
Would you kindly return to the bridge you live in and unplug the net? Thank you.

  • Mighty No. 56008

I dunno. I don’t have, nor do I really see, the problem with people sharing the unfortunate news of someone’s passing by using the hashtags. They were invovled with #GamerGate in some shape or form and I’m sure many of us appreciate that the news was broken to us sooner than later.

I also don’t really see the problem with Paolo Munoz making a fundraiser page to help support AFSP. Say what you want about the guy, but that little gesture helped to gather $1,175 for a good cause. I know some of us aren’t really keen on idea of us “playing nice” or trying to better our public image, but GamerGate has always been about doing what’s “right”. And donating money for something like this feels “right” to me.

With that said though, censor The Ralph Retort? Hell no! GamerGate is all about free speech and I urge you guys to continue writing whatever the heck you want. Will I always agree with what you write about? Heck no. Have I ever thought you guys were going a little nuts? Hell yeah! But I at least have the common sense to realize that we’re not all going to agree or react to every subject/issue the same exact way. We all have our own thoughts and opinions, and I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be a part of GamerGate if they tried to regulate that.

  • aliceinhaloland

Aside from the tone of the article, I wouldn’t say it was overall bad. I used to follow COV on twitter, but stopped when I realized how hypocritical she is. Personally, I don’t know Lily, I followed gamergate of the summer of last year, it is sad that she is no longer with us, I offer my sympathies, but, I still don’t know most of gg and the ones that I am familiar with, gg e-celebs, I learn to be very critical of due to their followers doing the whole listen & believe thing. I remain critical of the hashtag and that is, in part thanks to Ralph and Qu-Qu.

As for the article that was written, seeing as this doesn’t affect me in any shape or form, is just another piece of news. A bit inflammatory due to the drama that soon followed, I don’t get why they could’ve just direct message Ashton Liu on Twitter, or censor themselves a bit by saying, “A dear friend of mine has recently passed. Please send your condolences to Ashton Liu…” etc. They brought this attention to Lily and now her name is being smeared in the crossfire. This could have been handled in good taste and done the most respectful thing by discussing it with the family first before tweeting things. If they wanted to celebrate her life, they could have done it irl, when she was alive and well, and not tweet it. Personally, I think they should also apologize for the ensuing debacle. It takes two to tango.

Sorry, I’m not an eloquent writer. The RalphRetort should never censor themselves. Free speech and all that.
