SNL Writer Katie Rich Allegedly Fired After Barron Trump School Shooter Tweet, Name Removed From Credits (UPDATE)

Reports are swirling about Saturday Night Live writer Katie Rich allegedly being fired from her plum gig after her deplorable tweet about Barron Trump on the day of his father inauguration. In case you missed it, here’s the “joke” in all its glory…

You can no longer find the tweet because Ms. Rich went on to delete her Twitter, and maybe even her entire social media presence, from what we can tell.

There’s another thing we can tell: Rich’s name wasn’t on the credits last night after SNL aired. That has been taken to mean that she was fired, which is likely the case, given that the entire writing staff is usually listed on said credits. Maybe they took her off this week only, or put her on some kind of sabbatical. But a firing would also go a long way towards explaining the deletion of her Twitter account. Perhaps the shame simply became too much.

We don’t know for sure if she’s been fired yet, but it’s looking like that might be the case. What I am sure of is SNL now sucks big time. I mean it has for at least the last 10 years or so, but it’s gotten to be terminal over the last 6 months. During Saturday’s new episode, they did a musical tribute to Barack Obama. It wan’t a joke, either. The skit was just straight-up propaganda aimed at pleasing lefties. I don’t see the point in being, ya know, not funny on your comedy show, but that’s the path they’ve taken. It’s becoming a real habit as of late.

I wish Donald Trump could Make SNL Great Again, but that might be asking too much, even for him.

UPDATE II: Katie Rich has been “suspended indefinitely” from Saturday Night Live according to a published report. This may not be enough for some people, judging by the responses I’ve received in regard to this post on Twitter and elsewhere. Some will this this is fair, while I have no doubt other will think about how a right-winger would have been treated in a similar circumstance.

Also, note that her Twitter account was scrubbed clean of all old tweets/jokes. I guess she (or SNL brass) was worried about what else might come up if we had a chance to dig…

Rich has been suspended indefinitely from SNL in the wake of the tweet, according to a person familiar with the situation. Monday afternoon, Rich restored her Twitter account and tweeted an apology, though all of her other tweets have been deleted. “I sincerely apologize for the insensitive tweet. I deeply regret my actions & offensive words. It was inexcusable & I’m so sorry,” she wrote.

      I was watching an “SNL” re-run from November 18, 1978. Yeah! A while back. Carrie Fisher was hosting the show and Al Franken, Gilda Radner, Laraine Newman, Bill Murray, John Belushi, etc. were doing a “Beach Blanket Bingo ala Star Wars” scene. Carrie was adorable and young and alive! I felt so sad, because Carrie, John Belushi and Gilda were dead but most of all because the show was funny and they weren’t been mean and spiteful!

Left or right, they’ve gotten too damn political for their own good and lost sight of all that made them worthwhile in the first place: the comedy. In Cracked’s case, I think being branded a MAD Magazine rip-off should be considered a badge of honor compared to what they’ve become.

Freedom of speech means the government cannot persecute or prosecute for your words, but your employer absolutely has the right to fire you if you say something he/she doesn’t like. One funny one I saw was a picture of him looking worried and the caption was something like “Realising that you now have 10 bedrooms to masturbate in but your wifi is being monitored by the secret service”. That is actually funny imo. It wasn’t mean, it was just pointing out his predicament as a young boy in the white house.

If an employer believes that an employee has taken actions that, for any reasonable or contract reason, are highly problematic, they have the right to discipline her.     This makes alot of sense, actually. It felt alot like this wasn’t something SNL as a whole was about, all this trump bashing. Maybe they allowed it, and that makes them just as guilty. But what i mean is, it seemed like ole Kate had this vendetta and was begging to do all these different female roles so she can chop away at Trump. Seems like Baldwin had the same going on for him. Dude probably hunted SNL down to beg for the Trump role. Now it looks like both had help doing it. Most of it has not been funny.       I remember reading about times when Michael Palin or Eric Idle hosted SNL back in the day. The article contrasted the behind the scenes styles of SNL and Monty Python. In MP they’d write and refine the scripts, figure out who was the best picks to perform the sketch, really work out segues between the bits, and actually memorize their lines.

      In contrast the SNL crew just sat around high all week. You could tell half the time they were using cue cards because I don’t think they even could memorized when being so baked. When they had genuine talents it sometimes worked out, because people like that can make you laugh even when they improvise. They haven’t had any real talent for a long time now.

      People still quote MP stuff today, 45 years later.

    The problem is they hire these “people” right out of the college-they are young, arrogant, cocky….they think they are above reproach! There are certain things that are NOT FUNNY-i.e.school shootings, terrorism, etc. She deliberately picked on a 10 year old boy who by reason of birth belongs to the Trump family. Probably a very nice young man. But leave him alone. I am a middle school teacher and had I pulled a stunt like that, I can guarantee you-I would be fired.     Yes, Barron Trump is a kid. But he’s a kid on national TV. And Rich’s comment, while insensitive, was much more a commentary on Donald Trump. And as far as offensive comments go, this one was mild. Plus, as comedy, it was darn funny.

    Well the usual forced public apology doesn’t mean much to me. Fact remains, she spoke her heart and is only sorry it came back to bite her in the ass. People can’t change over night. Opinions can change that fast, but not beliefs. A few more weeks of being talked down to ought to solve such insensitive thoughts of calling young people you don’t know future mass murderers, but I doubt anyone in her circle will bother to help her in that regard.
