Like most other people, I watched the Donald Trump vs Hillary Clinton debate last night. I also live-tweeted it and did a short #Killstream after the festivities wrapped up. There were a few points that really stood out to me. One, was how well Trump did considering this was his first one-on-one debate ever. Another thing that drew my attention was how much room he has to grow between now and the next debate. There were several tactics he could have employed to make this a runaway victory but he just didn’t do them last night. Oh, and I’m also hoping the next moderator won’t be as blatantly biased as Lester Holt of NBC was tonight.

There were several times over the course of the debate when I expected Trump to go in for the kill, like with Hillary’s email problem. I can’t say he failed to hit the point home at all, since he got in a nice dig about them when Holt asked him to weigh in on his refusal to release his tax returns.

I thought this was effective and funny, but later on in the debate when the subject was cybersecurity, Trump didn’t hit her on the emails. I hate to toot my own horn, but this would have been the perfect barb to hit her with…

It’s not like the line was hard to come up with, either. It was right there for the taking. But there’s some thinking out there (and we talked about it on the stream) that Trump was told to leave a little bit on the table for the next two debates. He did clobber Hillary very hard at certain points, but he pointed backed during some key moments. Like when the topic of Trump’s past comments about women came up. This would have been the perfect time to remind the country about some of Mrs. Clinton’s own past comments about women…

Hillary Clinton claims to be pro-women, yet has actively worked to ruin lives of so many of them. She’s running on a “feminist platform” — she’s even dared to say that sexual-assault survivors have a “right to be believed” — despite the fact that what she did to the women who accused Bill went far beyond not believing them.

She attacked them.

When allegations of sexual misconduct emerged during Bill’s 1992 presidential run, she’s reported to have said “Who is going to find out? These women are trash. Nobody’s going to believe them.” Multiple people also report that she called the women “sluts” and “whores” — you know, for daring to be raped. A private investigator named Ivan Duda claims that, after Bill lost his second governor’s race, Hillary told him: “I want you to get rid of all these b****** he’s seeing . . . I want you to give me the names and addresses and phone numbers, and we can get them under control.”

I can see why he didn’t, though. There will be time to go there later on if he feels it’s necessary. Trump did well, it was just a little frustrating because he could have done so much better.

Another person who could have done better was Lester Holt. I have no problem with him asking Mr. Trump pointed questions. Hell, anyone should expect that. The issue I have is that he didn’t really throw any hardball queries Hillary’s way at all. He asked one question about her emails and that was about it. He also didn’t hit her hard on the follow-up afterwards. Contrast that with the way he treated Trump. He asked him about birtherism, his past comments on women, his refusal to release his tax returns, and challenged him directly on his Iraq War stance. The difference between his attitude towards Clinton when compared with how he went at Trump was night and day. I understand that bitching about the refs, so to speak, doesn’t really move the needle. But this was too blatant not to talk about. It’s not like there wasn’t other things to go at Hillary on, either. I might write a whole article about that later today.

Overall, I’m very eager to see what happens in debate #2. I expect Trump to close in a little harder next time. He hammered home the reason voters should choose him over his opponent. Namely, that Hillary Clinton has been in a position of power in Washington since the early 1990’s and she’s part of the problem. He talked about her horrible job as secretary of state and hit her hard at various points in the debate. Trump also kept his cool, relatively speaking. I mean, he’s still Donald Trump.

I think it was a fairly good night for The Donald, all things considered.
