Jesus Christ (pun intended), Donald Trump just gave one of the best political responses I think I’ve ever seen. Earlier today, he was attacked by Pope Francis. Now, since the Pope is one of the most popular people in the world, and in the United States, one would think that a politician might be very careful with any sort of rebuke. As we all know, Donald Trump isn’t your everyday politician.

I thank God for that. Actually, no I’m not religious, but it just fit there. Anyway, let’s look at what the Pope said before we get to Trump…

Thrusting himself into the combative 2016 presidential campaign, Pope Francis said Thursday that GOP frontrunner Donald Trump “is not Christian” if he calls for the deportation of undocumented immigrants and pledges to build a wall between the United States and Mexico.

The Pope, who was traveling back to Rome from Mexico, where he urged the United States to address the “humanitarian crisis” on its southern border, declined to say whether American Catholics should vote for Trump.

But Francis left little doubt where he stood on the polarizing issue of immigration reform.

“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian. This is not in the gospel,” the Pope told journalists who asked his opinion on Trump’s proposals to halt illegal immigration…

Asked if American Catholics should vote for Trump, Francis demurred. “As far as what you said about whether I would advise to vote or not to vote, I am not going to get involved in that. I say only that this man is not Christian if he has said things like that.”

My immediate thought was that this was going to end up helping Trump. Why? Because people instinctively don’t like it when you question a man’s religion. It didn’t work on Obama and it won’t work on Donald Trump. Most Americans just insctinctively recoil at that sort of tactic. Even Jeb Bush is defending Trump on this one! This going to turn out to be a huge win for The Donald. The voting takes place in 36 hours, by the way. This will easily eat up 24 of those hours.

Here’s Mr. Trump’s response, which he also posted over on Facebook:

The Mexican government and its leadership has made many disparaging remarks about me to the Pope, because they want to continue to rip off the United States, both on trade and at the border, and they understand I am totally wise to them.

You might not like Donald Trump. I can certainly understand that. Still, I can’t imagine any politician ever being this bold when responding to (according to polls) one of the most beloved men on the planet. He’s also beloved here as well, rocking a 66% approval rating. Trump said to hell with that, I’m going in on him New York Style. Whether he wins or loses on Saturday, I have to tip my cap to him. This is one of the boldest political moves I’ve ever seen. Also, it has the benefit of being 100% correct. A religious leader interfering in our presidential election like this is unheard of and it is disgraceful, just like Trump said. Even though he was right, I just don’t think anyone else would have had the balls to go at the Pope this hard.

Imagine what a President Trump might do to all the other sacred cows.
