South African Activist Rejoices Over “White Tears” After Denying Young Woman Her Tip
I have a pretty thick skin, but working in customer service really tested that. I’m a very polite person and I never forget my ‘thank you’s and ‘please’s (EDITOR’S NOTE: She also never forgets to harangue me about my mine), but it seems like not everyone has been brought up like that. I’ve heard ‘Girl, here. Now’ or ‘thick bitch’ and my favourite ‘blind idiot’. Which is all fine and dandy because by the end of the day, I’m still smiling. However, if someone left me a note saying ‘we will give tip when you return the land’, I think I’d lose my cool. That’s what happened to Ashleigh Schultz, a white waitress in a Cape Town restaurant, when Ntokozo Qwabe, a black Oxford postgraduate student, left her that note. Clearly it struck a chord, because she burst out crying when she read it.
Ntokozo was so tickled with himself that he decided to write about the incident on Facebook…
Qwabe later bragged on Facebook that he, and a friend, made the woman cry ‘typical white tears’, leaving him ‘unable to stop smiling because something so black and wonderful had happened’.
He wrote: ‘She sees the note and starts shaking. It is irrelevant whether you personally have land/wealth or you don’t. Go to your fellow white people and mobilise for them to give us the land back.’
This sounds utterly deluded and crass. Someone clearly wanted a power trip. The funny thing is, he didn’t even have the courage to say this to her face. He wrote on a piece of paper and handed it to her like 4th grader asking a girl out.
Then there’s the utter hypocrisy of it as well. Mr. Qwabe is a Rhodes scholar at Oxford University, where he receives money from the Rhodes estate to study. This same student is currently leading a campaign to remove a Cecil Rhodes statue at Oxford.
What a strong independent black man he is!
I understand people do stupid things in a spur of the moment thing and don’t realise what a bad move it is a week afterwards, but not Mr. Qwabe. In an interview with Daily Vox, he made his feeling very clear towards the matter.
The act was not directed at Ashleigh, the waitress. Quite frankly, her feelings are irrelevant to us.
That sounds kinda culty, doesn’t it? The whole interview consists of him sounds like an absolute nut. One of my favourite other quotes is:
Whiteness as an ideology is irrational. Just by virtue of this person being white – whiteness is a currency.
I absolutely recommend reading the whole interview because this man is utterly bonkers. As for the petition to get him kicked out of uni, according to him it’s ‘another white myth’. I personally think he should just be kicked off the scholarship, not the university.
There is a good part to this story. Ashleigh Schultz, the waitress whose mum was recently diagnosed with cancer, received more than £4,600 when online campaigners came together to raise money to lift her spirits. When a fellow South African Sihle Ngobese, heard of this story, he decided to go pay the tip himself and wrote:
‘Qwabe is someone that claims to speak to the downtrodden and the disenfranchised yet he has the audacity to bully a working-class young woman.
‘I just wanted to make a small gesture to show South Africans that if we love and respect each other it makes our country great.’
And I completely agree with that. Have a good day everyone.
