South African Activist Rejoices Over “White Tears” After Denying Young Woman Her Tip

I have a pretty thick skin, but working in customer service really tested that. I’m a very polite person and I never forget my ‘thank you’s and ‘please’s (EDITOR’S NOTE: She also never forgets to harangue me about my mine), but it seems like not everyone has been brought up like that. I’ve heard ‘Girl, here. Now’ or ‘thick bitch’ and my favourite ‘blind idiot’. Which is all fine and dandy because by the end of the day, I’m still smiling. However, if someone left me a note saying ‘we will give tip when you return the land’, I think I’d lose my cool. That’s what happened to Ashleigh Schultz, a white waitress in a Cape Town restaurant, when Ntokozo Qwabe, a black Oxford postgraduate student, left her that note. Clearly it struck a chord, because she burst out crying when she read it.

Ntokozo was so tickled with himself that he decided to write about the incident on Facebook…

Qwabe later bragged on Facebook that he, and a friend, made the woman cry ‘typical white tears’, leaving him ‘unable to stop smiling because something so black and wonderful had happened’.

He wrote: ‘She sees the note and starts shaking. It is irrelevant whether you personally have land/wealth or you don’t. Go to your fellow white people and mobilise for them to give us the land back.’

This sounds utterly deluded and crass. Someone clearly wanted a power trip. The funny thing is, he didn’t even have the courage to say this to her face. He wrote on a piece of paper and handed it to her like 4th grader asking a girl out.

Then there’s the utter hypocrisy of it as well. Mr. Qwabe is a Rhodes scholar at Oxford University, where he receives money from the Rhodes estate to study. This same student is currently leading a campaign to remove a Cecil Rhodes statue at Oxford.

What a strong independent black man he is!

I understand people do stupid things in a spur of the moment thing and don’t realise what a bad move it is a week afterwards, but not Mr. Qwabe.  In an interview with Daily Vox, he made his feeling very clear towards the matter.

The act was not directed at Ashleigh, the waitress. Quite frankly, her feelings are irrelevant to us.

That sounds kinda culty, doesn’t it? The whole interview consists of him sounds like an absolute nut. One of my favourite other quotes is:

Whiteness as an ideology is irrational. Just by virtue of this person being white – whiteness is a currency.

I absolutely recommend reading the whole interview because this man is utterly bonkers. As for the petition to get him kicked out of uni, according to him it’s ‘another white myth’. I personally think he should just be kicked off the scholarship, not the university.

There is a good part to this story. Ashleigh Schultz, the waitress whose mum was recently diagnosed with cancer, received more than £4,600 when online campaigners came together to raise money to lift her spirits. When a fellow South African Sihle Ngobese, heard of this story, he decided to go pay the tip himself and wrote:

‘Qwabe is someone that claims to speak to the downtrodden and the disenfranchised yet he has the audacity to bully a working-class young woman.

‘I just wanted to make a small gesture to show South Africans that if we love and respect each other it makes our country great.’

And I completely agree with that. Have a good day everyone.

But Nora, don’t you know that black people are angelic widdle snowfwakes who always have to be protected and coddled and praised for basic fucking decency? /sarcasm.

S/N: This fucker and his ilk make my blood boil past the boiling point. I’m glad I don’t work a job where my income is mostly dependent on tips, because if someone pulled some shit like this on me, I’d probably be permanently banned from working in any restaurant.

Is this a compliment or an insult? Or both?

        • Sockpuppet Nora

You never know with Jack, honestly. I think it’s a compliment.

    • Sockpuppet Nora

I think I’d make my feeling VERY KNOWN and not in a nice way.

  • so let me get this straight, “whiteness” is an ideology but his “blackness” is not?

When “wonderful and black things happen” shouldn’t he say that is also an ideology?

QUOTE-> leaving him ‘unable to stop smiling because something so black and wonderful had happened’.

so a privileged, well studied and funded person from the fancy high society refuses to pay for a decent service he got and enjoyed and actually attempts(and succeeds) at guilt tripping a hard working honest waiter

all because of the color of their skins

and he has the thinks he is in the right, because skin colors

this is the kind of delusion that only ideology can do

  • Dave The Sandman

This cowardly race hustling little rat should be kicked off the scholarship scheme he is so obviously undeserving of – especially as his behavior breaks the rules that very same scholarship scheme sets, which impose on its recipients a set of standards they must uphold.
Let us reverse the situation. How long would you expect Sandman to retain his Rhodes scholarship if he had handed Ntokozo here a bill with:
“You get a tip when you and your people pay us whites back for all those roads, railways, hospitals and schools we built in Africa. Oh…and all the free boat rides to America you lot got back in the 1800s”
    written on it?

I do believe the media would have said a bigger deal if this had happened to a black person, but I’m happy to see that people were pissed at this guy. This story made me pretty anger, clearly this guy wants to feel important.

    • Loopy Loon

Funny how folks like Qwabe take all that infrastructure left behind by their oppressors for granted, people need to start raising their kids to recognize that history isn’t black & white.

  • Silence Dogood

So apparently “blackness” equates to making white people miserable. Would they like the chains to go back on? Because I’m pretty sure that could be arranged.

  • Lost Question

either A the guy talking about white tears is lying or b one cheap f*cker thats going to recieve shit service when he go’s back (and probably at a few other restaurants)

  • Devin_MacGregor

I would had whispered to him to beware of the gentlemen I overheard who are going to follow him home and that I saw they had a rope.

  • Mr0303

Not only that but he’s a hypocrite – he accepted the Rhodes Scholarship and then campaigned to remove the statue of Cecil Rhodes at Oriel.

If anything there is a petition to kick out this vile monster out of Oxford. I doubt it will be successful, but at least it will help me sleep a bit better.

The only thing Mr. Qwabe said that is of any value here is, “Quite frankly, her feelings are irrelevant to us.” Okay, sure, next time you get triggered by something I said I will keep your statement in mind. Thaaaaaanks.
