On Thursday, five acid attacks occurred in London over the course of 90 minutes. Two boys were arrested; a 15 year old boy and a 16 year old boy. Allegedly, these boys threw acid in the face of the victims and then proceeded to rob them. One of the victims injuries were described as ‘life-changing’.

The 16-year old, whose name has not been released, has been charged with 15 offences which include robbery, possession of an item to discharge a noxious substance, GBH with intent and handling stolen goods. There is currently no news on the 15 year old. No news outlet has reported on the ethnicity of either of the boys, perhaps the police feel that gives too much away about their identity.

The boys were able to get around North London when they threw acid in the face of the first victim, and stole his moped. They then threw acid in the face of four other men who had been riding mopeds, and stole a moped from the last victim.

The number of acid attacks occurring in the UK have sky-rocked.  In 2016 alone, there were 431 acid attacks compared to 2015 when there were 261. And nearly a quarter of them involved some kind of thief. When comparing it to Pakistan’s figures, the contrast is quite shocking. There were 101 people injured in acid attacks in 2015 in Pakistan, according to official figures. Now this could mean some attacks were not reported, but according to the figures more than double the attacks occurred in the UK. Honestly, I was quite shocked at this news. I didn’t think things in the UK had gotten so bad. Due to this, I think it very important we all learn what do this this happens to us. There’s a helpful article on what the fuck to do if some crazy asshole throws acid at you or someone next to you.
