There’s been another shooting by police and as is usually the case, the situation is murky at this point. What we do know is that this was not a black man getting killed by a white officer. Instead, Keith Lamont Scott died at the hands of a young black police officer named Brentley Vinson. Unfortunately for the Charlotte metro area, that doesn’t seem to matter. It also doesn’t seem to matter to Scott’s brother, who called the entire white race devils in a statement earlier today…

I’m not sure how that’s logical, given that his brother got killed by a black cop. I’m also not sure how that’s supposed to contribute to anything other than maybe a riot or some more killing.

There’s two different narratives surrounding this shooting. The police have this to say:

Police said they had been searching for someone who had an outstanding warrant at The Village at College Downs complex on Old Concord Road when they saw Scott leave his car holding a gun.

Officers approached Scott after he got back into the car. He emerged from the car again armed with a firearm “and posed an imminent deadly threat to the officers, who subsequently fired their weapon striking the subject,” police said in a statement. “The officers immediately requested Medic and began performing CPR.”

Medic took Scott to Carolinas Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Scott was not the person officers were searching for to arrest on the outstanding warrants, CMPD Chief Kerr Putney told reporters later.

Police said they recovered the firearm Scott was holding.

While the family tells a different story altogether:

His family has disputed the police statements about the shooting, saying he was waiting for his son to come home from school when police arrived at the apartment complex and shot him…

But his family tells a different story. They say Scott was reading a book in his car while waiting for his son to be dropped off by a school bus. His brother told reporters that the officer who shot Scott was undercover and was in plainclothes, not a uniform. Police have not confirmed or denied that detail.

I made a joke on Twitter about the book he was carrying, but to be honest with you I have no idea what the truth of the matter is. If you’ve read the site, you know I’ve come down on the side of victims before and I’ve also supported police justifications. One thing I do believe is that we need to do something differently here in America, however coming up with just what that something is…well, it’s quite difficult to say the least.

I don’t think family members coming out and going full race war is the answer, though. Plus Black Lives Matter has spun so much bullshit in the past that the well has sort of been poisoned. I’m hopeful that the facts of this case will come out more in time. You would think that if the police say they recovered a firearm that their account would have a bit more credence at this point, but we’ll say. One thing to keep in mind on that though, which my pro-gun friend just reminded me about, is that North Carolina is an open carry state.

Also, the same brother who went nuts up top also said the cop who shot Scott was not in uniform and was instead undercover.

Again, no one knows the full story at this point except maybe the cop who shot him…and he’s obviously not going to be talking for awhile. Keep your eye on this story and be ready for bullshit from either direction.
