When I sing-along to rap, I do not edit the n-word. Period. If I’m in front of a black person, I will consider it, if I think it might offend them. But I have never personally met a black person who cares, at least to my face. All the black friends I’ve ever had could not care in the least. There’s a big difference between singing it in a rap verse and calling someone the “hard R” version to their face. It’s not even remotely the same thing and anyone with once ounce of sense does not treat it as such.

Chris Rock did a bit on this very topic years ago, and he agrees with my take.

Again, if one of your black friends specifically asks you not to say it during your sing-along, you should probably refrain, out of respect for your friend. But other than than specific request, which I’ve never received, who cares? Well, Deadspin cares, for one. You see, they wanted to shame some white Virginia Tech lacrosse players over their rendition of the Lil’ Dickey & Chris Brown song, Freaky Friday.

The video for the song itself is pretty hilarious…

Here’s the Va Tech snippet…

They’re clearly having fun and don’t mean anything negative with their use of the word. But Deadspin wrote it up anyway, and the post currently has 246,000 hits. After they linked the video above in the post, it has over 330,000 views. Now, was it the smartest thing to film your n-word sing-along and post it to Snapchat? No, probably not. But it’s not a big deal. The girls were just having fun on their way back from a match. Also, this one part of their singing was clipped out so that it looked like they just posted this clip to be edgy. There was a lot more to the original series of clips.

The responses on Deadspin are mostly cancer, but there are some people with half a brain that still visit the site…

The funniest part about this comment is that another poster tried to challenged his blackness. So, we were treated to a black arm post down…

Such is the state of discussion on this issue.

At the end of the day, this whole thing is autistic. Some white girls were singing along to one of the most popular songs in the country and one of their associates leaked their Snapchat clip in order to roast them. Then, Deadspin, in true Gawker fashion, decided to try and make problems for them at their school. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
